One is known for his soothing voice and poetic song writing skills, whereas the other is renowned for his exceptional taste in making striking production and beats. The duo Jory & Karl Ave have joined forces in the creation of their latest EP, Equinox. The Vancouver-based artists’ project was very much long overdue: “We planned this project around a year ago and it was 90 percent completed.” That is until Karl Ave had his laptop stolen from his car one evening in a parking garage. Five years worth of Karl Ave’s music, including his collaborative project with Jory was stolen. This traumatic event only encouraged them to generate an even stronger project with better sound and production.

Karl Ave initially gravitated toward the sounds of music by experimenting with the keys of a piano at just nine-years old. Throughout the following years, he continued to expand his interest in music by fiddling around with multiple instruments – trumpet, drums, baritone, trombone and guitar. At fifteen, Karl Ave taught himself how to produce by familiarizing himself with programs like Ableton, Logic Pro and Freeloops. He quickly captivated the ability to produce, mix beats and song write in order to create tunes that captured his own signature sound. Pharrell, Daft Punk, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder are some of Karl Ave’s biggest influences who motivated him to begin his journey producing beats. Earlier projects of his can be found on SoundCloud, which Jory gravitated towards and was immediately hypnotized by. This genuine admiration enabled the pairs eagerness to begin building music together.

Jory always had a fascination for music but became further inspired through artists like Mac Miller, Kanye West and Odd Future to start making his own, and debuted as a hip hop artist back in 2018. “In the past, I wasn’t sure what music I wanted to make, but I have grown a lot through practice and studio sessions in these past years.” Jory believes it is only recently that he has found his sound as an artist, and with the assistance of Karl Ave, has created an abundant amount of remarkable music. “He’s definitely my right hand when it comes to making music.”

This project is particularly special to both Jory & Karl Ave, as it is the first one which features vocals from both artists on all five tracks. Previously, Karl Ave had strictly produced beats for Jory, but Equinox is a project where you are able to hear both artists voices alongside the mesmerizing production skills of Karl Ave.

“It’s called Equinox because it refers to the transition that happens twice a year, when night and day are equal in time.” It occurs when the sun is at line with the celestial equator, dividing the day from night equally in half. Their project was released on September 22, 2020, the second equinox of the year. This transitional period was the accurate time for Jory & Karl Ave to release their EP, due to the symbolic reasoning behind an equinox of transitioning into a new season. “The EP has a summer-meets-fall type of sound to it.”

Jory & Karl Ave released two singles “Oz” in 2019, followed by “Apollo” in January, both featured on Equinox. This dream-like EP includes lively sounds, eccentric chords and melodic beats that combine and bring to life this hip-hop meets singing/songwriting type of sound. Jory admits he expresses a far more vulnerable side of himself by incorporating more of his singing voice in Equinox. “It’s definitely a little bit different than stuff I made before.”

Hear Jory’s honest self on the last track of the EP – “Equinox Outro.” This song came to life while Jory was enduring a difficult day, fighting off the poor mentality that comes with pursuing a career in an industry that doesn’t always guarantee success. As Karl Ave was listening to him vent, he pulled out the microphone and began recording Jory’s frustrating thoughts. Karl Ave put his talents to work by constructing Jory’s words into a poetic song demonstrating how some artists may feel at times when they lose their sense of direction.

This past year, Jory & Karl Ave both made their way through an abundant amount of hurdles, but through it all came out triumphant as this project exemplifies a well ranged and composed mix of sound and production. “It’s not just random songs put together, it’s a structured story that was built to flow.”
