Skaters with Style: 5 Illegal Civ Icons

Clueless (1995)

“I don’t want to be a traitor to my generation and all, but I don’t get how guys dress today. It looks like they just fell out of bed, put on some baggy pants, took their greasy hair and covered it up with a backwards cap, and we’re expected to swoon?”

Cher Horowitz may have had a point back in 1995, but in 2020 we are all swooning over—and imitating—men’s fashion, specifically skaters’ street style.

Skateboarding has been around and is still around, but the emphasis on skater style is something the past couple of years have brought about.

This phenomenon has much to do with Illegal Civilization, a clothing brand and self-described “first teen movie studio.” IC combines fashion and film and has produced IC1, IC2, and  IC3 videos—a collective highlight reel of several skaters and candid moments of the crew having fun. The brand has also released short films, one called Summer of ‘17, and Civ fans are anxiously awaiting IC’s first feature film, North Hollywood.

The website is home to statement pieces like tees, hoodies, skateboard decks, and hats for skaters and supporters alike.

IC now has a fashionable group of guys who not only represent Illegal Civ clothing, but are stylish in their everyday wear as well. Look no further for streetwear inspo, here’s a list of skaters with style.

1. Mikey Alfred

The man behind Illegal Civilization effortlessly blends street style with class. Often seen with a sweater tied around his shoulders, an IC tee paired with slacks and dress shoes, or a navy-blue suit with hand-painted dogs on it, Mikey’s style is unique and encapsulates Illegal Civ’s brand perfectly—being unafraid to stand out.

This San Francisco native can be spotted with a cap or beanie on his head, a muscle tee, or a colorful printed button-up (no undershirt required). Nico is not one to shy away from statement pieces and keeps his style fun and youthful with pastel colorways.

3. Ryder McLaughlin

Beanies and stripes are his friends. This skater and actor (see his performance as “Fourth Grade” in the 2018 film Mid90s) keeps it casual, with Converse and chinos, but never basic, with hair that’s been buzzed, bleached, and dyed pink.

4. Kevin White

He’s travelled the world doing what he loves, and he’s done so fashionably—always with fun sunnies and a pop of color.
