Contrary to its name, UK-based Ugly Accessories makes jewelry that is uniquely stunning and obsession-worthy. Just one glance at their Instagram page and you’ll be met with product posts that are both quirky and innovative. Their feed is littered with snapshots of the iconic 90s grunge princess Beabadoobee showing off her signature Ugly Accessories beaded necklaces in OOTDs and music videos.
If you’re looking for accessories that bring out a combination of your inner 60s hippie and 90s rockstar, Ugly Accessories has got you covered as the perfect blend of both eras. Expect necklaces adorned with chunky glass beads, cobwebs and their signature “Hazy Daisy” charms (red-eyed tripping daisies that have gotten up to who-knows-what). Of course, modelled by the gorgeous Olivia O.
The 17-year-old creative mind behind this brand, Georgiana Triggs, is beyond grateful and astonished at how her business has taken off. From its humble beginnings as a small Depop store, Ugly Accessories has amassed 17.3k followers on Instagram and close to 10k on Depop in just a year and a half. Georgiana can’t even believe it herself. “It’s crazy… people just love it.”
It’s to no surprise, as customers flock to every jewelry drop hoping to get their hands on the constantly evolving designs of Ugly Accessories. More recently, the brand released Halloween-themed necklaces and earrings so funky you could wear them anytime of the year. The creative process is intuitive and honest. “I just try and make how I’m feeling. I just go off me, how I’m doing… whatever.”
And how would Georgiana describe Ugly Accessories? “Playful, unique, and like… ugly! I feel like ugly fashion is so on trend. People like it, all the y2k weird stuff is coming back. Most of the time when I think it’s ugly, people are like, oh-my-fucking-god this is beautiful. There’s not much rhyme or reason, I just make it up as I go along.”
You might think that the creation of Ugly Accessories was influenced by Georgiana’s personal style, but she insists that it’s the other way around. “I was pretty depressed at the time, so I wasn’t thinking about anything else. Recently, I’ve been building my wardrobe back up and trying to buy sustainably, ‘cause why not? I’ve been trying to find loads of weird, funky depop pages, mainly in the UK, like Timeless Wear. I love little graphic tees ‘cause they look nice in photos.”
What does she hope people feel looking at her creations? “Because of all the color, beads and charms, I hope it brings nostalgia because I’m seriously making jewelry that I would love as a 10-year-old. Everyone’s bringing back childhood vibes like Bratz and Polly Pocket.”
Of course, what better way to instill nostalgia than to get inspired by the past. “I’m inspired by whatever music I’m listening to. I’ve been loving Pink Floyd and Beabadoobee obviously, she’s been putting out bangers right now. And just how I’m feeling, if I feel a bit fucked off I’ll make something. And that’s a good use of time.”
As a Beabadoobee enthusiast, she of course had a fangirl moment over the British icon being a prominent customer. “Honestly, it’s just amazing. I listened to her music before, and it’s amazing seeing it in a music video. Like, oh my god, she kept it on whilst she’s filming! Or like, she’s at a photoshoot today, and she’s got it on. That’s too nice! I love seeing her wear them, and I love how much she must love it ‘cause she wears it all the time.”
What’s new for Ugly Accessories? “Definitely a website in the future, sometime next year-ish. And as the seasons are changing I’m trying to do different things. I just come up with whatever whenever!”
“Before I started this, I was really depressed. So I’m just finding my style, finding myself. I’m only 17! I’m just chilling and having fun with it, playing about.”
