Take a peek at Conversations Over Chai’s Instagram feed and you’ll be welcomed by inviting colors, whimsical art, and funky jewelry that is sure to bring a smile to your face. Quirky and interesting accessories have been all the rage in 2020, and it’s easy to see why—we’re all looking for something to bring a little joy into our lives. None are crafting that joy better than Cheyenne Pettiford, the 26-year-old jewelry maker behind the brand.
What started as an idea to casually share fun jewelry creations with friends and family quickly transformed into a full-fledged business. Cheyenne began making jewelry for herself last year, and at first didn’t intend to launch her own line. However, with some help, she ultimately took a leap of faith and started Conversations Over Chai in August of 2019. Cheyenne lists both her friend, Abby (owner of @abigailbellvintage), and her boyfriend, Bishop, as two of her biggest supporters during the early stages of the brand. “Abby and I were roommates when I lived in NYC, and she helped me make pieces, gave me her opinions, and shared my work when I got started. I don’t think [Conversations Over Chai] would be here without her—thank you Abby!”
When designing, Cheyenne is inspired by emotion, and seeks to invoke joy and possibly a bit of laughter in those who come across her jewelry. Hence the unconventional (or even profane) phrases assembled with colorful letter beads that have become her signature style. She explains, “I think jewelry should be fun and quirky, so I always approach new pieces that way.” Even the name, Conversations Over Chai, originated from Cheyenne’s desire to use good vibes as her main source of inspiration: “I named it after that feeling you get when you meet your friend or a loved one in a coffee shop after you haven’t seen them in a while, and spend time catching up and laughing over a beverage and snack (and chai lattes are my personal favorite!).”
Not only does Cheyenne craft her own necklaces, bracelets, and earrings for her brand, but Conversations Over Chai also consists of amazing vintage jewelry finds. “I love the creative freedom of creating something totally new, but there is definitely a thrill in finding fun vintage pieces to share.” And she never disappoints. The vintage pieces are always unique and eye-catching, with funny scenes including a couple square dancing, a six pack of beer, and a stork carrying a newborn baby.
And Cheyenne’s favorite part? Her community of happy customers. “Honestly, there are days when it’s hard to find motivation to create something new—I think literally everyone feels this way in one way or another, especially in this time of chaos. But it makes me so happy to see people receive their pieces and share pictures and positive feedback. I’m still new to this, and there are lots of times when I feel unsure of what I’m creating, but hearing from people who have received something from me makes it so worth it! Imposter syndrome is definitely a thing, and encouragement to keep moving forward is super helpful.”

As for Conversations Over Chai, Cheyenne hopes to continue building a safe space where accessory lovers can comfortably be themselves. She is also looking to do more collaborations with other designers in the near future. Her last collab with the online shop Berriez was a total hit, so we’re excited to see what comes next.
