Klo By Klo combines pastel floral prints with modern, sexy silhouettes to create irresistibly unique clothing pieces. Founded by Kloey Ramirez, the brand reflects her fairy-meets-festival style and features adorable bra tops, iconic dresses, and more.
As early as elementary school, Kloey was obsessed with the world of fashion and declared she wanted to be a designer. For the last few years, she has succeeded in the fashion-adjacent industry of modeling, but in 2019 decided it was finally time to cultivate her true passion for creating clothing. “I always talked about how I wanted to start a brand, but I never had the money, or I never had the resources, and I was just kind of making excuses. But when I learned about sustainability, I realized I could just do it all myself. I don’t need a big manufacturer or to spend all this money on new fabrics.”
Q: When were you first introduced to the idea of sustainability?
I’d say about two years ago I really didn’t know anything about sustainability. But lately I’ve seen a lot of brands talk about it, and also I’ve seen the harmful effects of fast fashion. With Klo By Klo, I wanted to do something that I could stand behind and feel confident in. I don’t know if I would feel super confident in my brand if it wasn’t something at least environmentally friendly. I am also vegan, so it just all made sense to do it that way.
Q: What is your creative process like?
I’ve only been sewing for like a year and a half so I can’t just imagine something and create it right away, I really have to think about it. I’ve started sketching and that’s been helping me a lot because I always get these ideas and then I just completely forget about them. Also, a lot of the fabric I get are garments already made and that inspires me sometimes, I’ll either try to make something similar or I might completely redo it.
Q: Has Klo By Klo kept you busy this quarantine?
Yeah, it’s actually so nice because modelling is so off and on, so there were times where I was just sitting and not knowing what to do. But with my brand, I really feel like I have a purpose and I can wake up and have something to do everyday.
Q: Considering your background, why did you choose to use other models for Klo By Klo shoots?
I love my clothes but I like to see them on someone else and create this whole different person. I do all the shoots myself and I love every part of it. I’m not the best photographer but when I do it myself I feel like I can really get my vision how I want it to be.
Q: How would you describe the style of Klo By Klo?
Two years ago I really got into going to festivals because when I moved to LA that’s what all my friends did. At first, when I started my brand I wanted it to be just festival wear but I slowly realized I would wear these festival-type clothes as everyday wear. So I think that’s pretty much what it is, festival wear for everyday.
Q: Do any musical or visual artists inspire you and your brand?
Yes, I’m the biggest Miley Cyrus fan and her Dead Pets album is truly my inspiration. I’m always playing it, it’s like a two hour album, and I’m obsessed with it. I love all the videos, and the colors, and the glitter, it’s like the most inspiring thing to me.
Q: Is there anything you’ve learned about yourself since starting your brand?
I started off hand sewing everything because I didn’t have a sewing machine and even though it is so tedious and takes forever, I realized how much I actually love making clothes. I wish I would have started a long time ago but I’m so happy that I finally did because now it is like the best feeling.
Q: What do you hope to accomplish with Klo By Klo?
During quarantine when I’m not working my usual other jobs, I’ve had to take some sponsorships that don’t necessarily reflect my views and don’t reflect how I feel about the fashion industry. I really can’t wait until I can get to the point where I don’t have to do those brand deals, and I can just work on Klo By Klo and be authentic.
