SHEESH! had the wonderful pleasure of talking with Valentina Cy about her inspirations, upcoming work, and music video for her new single.
How did you get started in music?
VALENTINA CY: My dad is a musician so he is really the one responsible for my love of music. My dad always made sure I was always listening to great music growing up and taking piano and guitar lessons to expand my musical knowledge. When I was 10 years old I joined the jazz band in my school and that really brought on my thirst to tour the world with music. Ever since I could remember I have only ever wanted to be a singer and make music for my career.
How would you define your musical stylings and sound?
VALENTINA CY: I make organic soul-pop! I love singing about extremely personal experiences that I have gone through in my life. I love letting my vocals and lyrics shine through in my work because I believe those to be the most important parts of my artistic vision and songwriting.
Who are some of your biggest artistic inspirations?
VALENTINA CY: I love Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, Taylor Swift, and Christina Aguilera to just name a few!
Could you tell us a little bit about your new single coming out?
VALENTINA CY: Yes! It’s called Postmates and I wrote, produced, and recorded it in my bedroom actually, which was a really great experience. The story behind this song is that an ex-boyfriend of mine from a few years back kept using my phone number for his Postmates orders. He kept “forgetting” to take my number off of the app so I had to call and text him every time he ordered something. In all honesty I’m pretty sure it was just his sly way of keeping in contact with me.
The music video for Postmates is absolutely beautiful! Can you tell us a little bit more about the process behind your music videos and what it’s like working with your sister?
VALENTINA CY: Thank you so much! I basically give my sister a song of mine and then she comes up with a concept that fits my music and my personality perfectly. It’s really incredible that I get to work with her so closely. There is no other person in the world that I would let help me as much as Marcella does creatively! It’s so nice getting to make music videos with my best friend.
What is your songwriting process like?
VALENTINA CY: This past year, aside from a few zoom sessions, it’s pretty much always just me in my room thinking and dreaming up new lyrics. I am constantly thinking of lyrics and melodies throughout the day and writing or recording them on my phone, I then flesh out ideas in my studio/room. I record piano or guitar melodies and then loop it and write the song over it, record it, and produce it. My mom is an artist and she has the most self-discipline I have ever seen so she inspires me to write every day even if I don’t exactly feel like it, which I’m very grateful for.
Being such a multifaceted artist like yourself, do you have any advice for other young creatives on how to break into the industry?
VALENTINA CY: Throw paint at the wall. Put out the music and art that feels the most personal to you and others will relate in some way, shape, or form. When you put out something that comes from your soul people are able to see that and feel connected to it. Though it might take a while to “make it,” it means so much when even one person connects with what you are putting out into the world, so you really need to just throw caution to the wind and go for it!
How does it feel to be a woman in the music industry?
VALENTINA CY: I feel powerful. I have never thought twice about the strength a woman holds and I am so thankful to be surrounded by such great ones. It’s really an incredible feeling!
If there’s one thing you could change about the music industry what would it be?
VALENTINA CY: I would love for CDs to be in style like they used to be. It would be so fun to be able to design CD covers and send them out to fans! I really miss them, and think that they should totally make a comeback!
What’s next? Anything exciting?
VALENTINA CY: So much is next! As of now I can tell you that Postmates is the first part of what will unfold to be a whirlwind of my deepest thoughts and emotions from the past intense and crazy year. There will be many music videos and songs to come in the next few months. I can promise it!
Make sure to stream Valentina’s music on Spotify and Apple Music and don’t forget to stalk her socials!
