Odell Mun is a 19-year-old model, fashion aficionado, and multifaceted creative based out of Melbourne, Australia. Over a short period of time, Odell has transformed his passion for the fashion world and connecting with other creatives into a professional pursuit. Entering the industry at full tilt, he has already been signed to a modeling agency, created his own clothing line, and plans to build a supportive label for creatives like himself. We were able to come together and converse in-depth about his process of creating captivating looks with high fashion and the mutual agreement that Kid Cudi is the ultimate legend.
How is your creative process linked to yourself as an individual?
Odell Mun: My moods are linked to how I create; if I’m feeling moody I’ll use that mood to create a style and an aesthetic. I’ll use that gloomy mood and create a dark theme with specifically gloomier shots. Whatever it is that I’m feeling is what I put out into the creative world.
How has your personal life influenced your foray into the creative world?
Odell Mun: During my childhood in Africa, I used to handmake cities and cars with clay. That’s definitely where my creative roots began, and I think I’ve ultimately used that creativity to my advantage.
What does fashion mean to you?
Odell Mun: It’s simply about expressing yourself; you become your own individual. It shows people who you are and how you feel. You can become your own person.
What do you look for in pieces?
Odell Mun: I always focus on the shapes of clothes. I really love Raf Simons just because of the long shapes he uses in his designs. Raf’s pants are usually long and baggy, and it gives them a 90s feel. I’ve always been drawn to monogram shapes as well, like the classic Louis Vuitton. The structure is what I’m focused on.
What are your current aspirations?
Odell Mun: Outwst is my current pursuit. It’s something that was created to give exposure to creatives on the rise. The same way labels sign musicians, we want to do that with the fashion world and help connect people. I also hope to one day expand on my own fashion line.
Who do you look up to creatively?
Odell Mun: I listen to a lot of Kanye and like his line Yeezy a lot. I also have a massive appreciation for Virgil Abloh, but I’d have to stick to Kanye. My love for Yeezy goes back to my love for shapes. I especially like how pieces are structured in Yeezy. I also listen to a lot of Kid Cudi, he’s a legend.
How do you think fashion trends become prevalent in their culture?
Odell Mun: Fashion is especially different based on the weather. It’s also based on how big the fashion scene is in that city or location and whether they’re trendsetters. France could easily make anything a trend, and people will follow simply because France has the credibility to start trends.
What are some final words you’d like to share?
Odell Mun: For those who want to get into fashion but are hesitant, do it for fun until it becomes serious. Frequently people are scared to give something a shot because they’re too focused on the end result. It’s important to try things for fun. If you’re waiting for the perfect idea to execute, you might never get there. You just have to give it your all.
