Monette K-D was only a kindergarten student when she was given the freedom to begin creating her own outfits. The five-year old utilized her artistic mindset to piece together outfits full of versatile patterns and bold colors. Now, at 20-years old, Monette’s passion for fashion has developed as she continues to express herself creatively through the outfits she puts together and unique pieces she designs.
The Toronto-based fashion lover recently gained some attention on the app TikTok by providing her fashion expertise to her followers. Back in April when quarantine began she came up with the idea to style a close friend. They created a duet on TikTok of Monette looking at photos of her friends’ closet to piece together items. After she had selected the pieces she had her friend try on the outfits to display the final looks. The video immediately received a lot of attention and accumulated over 1.6 million views. Her DMs were filled with people eager for a chance to be styled by her. She took the attention she received and got to work.
Quarantine shifted for Monette — she stopped doing nothing and turned it into something: “as soon as I woke up, I exchanged messages with followers, then styled them. I was making 7-8 TikToks a day for at least two months straight.” Her efforts did not go unnoticed, and since then has received over 1 million likes and 40,000 followers by creating outfits for her followers.
Monette’s eye for fashion certainly received the credibility it deserved. Her popularity on TikTok has granted her the opportunity to establish a full-time position styling clients, “I’m at the point where I can do this full-time and quit my other job to focus on what matters to me — fashion.”
Since Monette’s TikTok fame, she has begun to expand her brand into other platforms and ideas. She now provides online shopping for her clients where she will ask for their personal budget, pick out pieces online and enhance their wardrobe. She is focusing on increasing her creative content on other platforms like YouTube, Instagram and Depop, but will remain focusing specifically on TikTok where it all started for her.
Monette is inspired by Depop queens Melissa Tatti and the Internet Girl and wishes to expand her Depop account to sell more thrifted, vintage and D.I.Y. pieces. Her TikTok followers are beginning to navigate themselves over to her other platforms, including her Depop page where you can find her fabulous pieces to purchase.
Monette is hoping to eventually begin selling her own unique and personal bundles of clothing to her followers, “Once things reopen I can thrift and vintage shop more often, then eventually grow my inventory big enough to make these clothing bundles.” She plans to connect with followers, ask them a series of personal questions about their style, and with that, create the perfect outfit for them, to which she will ship it out to their location.
From inside the four walls of her Toronto apartment, Monette has established her own unique brand and will continue to remotely style clients. Her knowledge for fashion, thrift and sneakers is outstanding, which allows her to establish trusted relationships with her followers. When she styles a follower, it’s much more meaningful than only a DM response or a shout out in a video, it’s a connection. It’s been just three months since she began creating fashion content on TikTok, but with her determination and future plans, Monette K-D has a promising future ahead of her.
