Today we’re counting down the 8 movies every fashion lover must see before they die. This list is perfect for you if you are a bona fide fashion devotee, or just really need some new movies to binge. Either way, here’s a closer look at what SHEESH! considers some of the most fashionable films of all time.
1. The Craft (1996)
If a movie about four teenage witches in a small town doesn’t sound like the most trendsetting film ever made, I really don’t know what would! Both the styling and wardrobe throughout this film are pretty much what all of our Fall 2020 Pinterest boards look like. Completed with floral midi skirts, longline leather blazers, and lots of layering, this movie holds every alt girl’s dream wardrobe.
2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)
Vintage on vintage on vintage! If you ever wanted to live in the late 60s solely for the clothing trends, then the styling by Arianne Phillips in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will leave you awestruck. This movie is essentially one long letter of love to the iconic Sharon Tate, portrayed by Margot Robbie in the film. While Sharon Tate created her indescribable style all on her own, Phillips did an impeccable job of providing Robbie with the looks she needed to play her. And please don’t get me started on Brad Pitt’s entire wardrobe!
3. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Wes Anderson is kenned for his symmetrical cinematography that causes the watcher’s eye to go precisely where he intended it to, but my eyes were keenly fixated on Gwyneth Paltrow’s wardrobe during this 2000’s classic. This movie will leave you dreaming of fur coats and hot pants long after the credits are done rolling.
4. Clueless (1995)
Clueless is a cult classic film that has inspired trends across the board for decades. From plaid mini skirts to knee-high socks and biker shorts, this movie has it all. Directed by Amy Heckerling and starring Alicia Silverstone, Clueless is considered one of the most fashionable movies of all time as the main character wears a whopping 59 outfits throughout the film. This 90s teen hit even inspired high fashion designer Donatella Versace who paid tribute to the movie on the runways in the 90s and again in 2018.
5. Coyote Ugly (2000)
Coyote Ugly follows the story of another young girl trying to make it in the big city. We follow Violet Sanford’s journey of becoming a successful singer in NYC. The fashion and styling in this film, which was done by stylist Marlene Stewart, truly evolves with the character of Violet. As Violet arrives in the big apple she’s often seen in denim, floral, and peasant tops, to show her small-town innocence. Then as she progresses to work in the Coyote Ugly Bar, adjusts to city life, and begins to blossom she wears things like leather pants, leopard skirts, and ripped shirts.
6. Blow-Up (1966) fashionable film
Michelangelo Antonioni’s cult-favorite follows the story of a famous high fashion photographer who captures a gruesome murder on his film camera while in a London park. This movie fulfills every 60s inspired fashion fanatic’s dreams, with styling and costume design done by Jocelyn Rickards and guest appearances by your favorite fashion icons such as Jane Birkin, Melanie Hampshire, and Jill Kennington. The style and clothing hold true to today as they are not the gimmicky cartoon 60s inspired fashion we normally see, but rather the upscale everyday wear of London’s finest.
7. Almost Famous (2000)
Penny Lane’s fur-trimmed coat! Embroidered under the knee boots, twice! Every mini skirt you could ever need, and the accessories to match! Penny Lane from Almost Famous will obviously be our fashion goddess for the rest of time.
8. Taxi Driver (1976)
This one’s for the boys! Not that fashion holds any gender construct anymore, but Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver has been putting iconic men’s looks on the runway even after 40 years. Designers like Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, and Coach have all paid tribute to the many stylistic themes in this movie during fashion weeks over the years.
