The talented Berry Jenkins made this movie stunning, beautiful, sad, vulnerable and perfect. Moonlight was filmed in Miami, Florida, which naturally generates this dreamy cinematography to the big screen. In addition to that, the combination of the poetic score and hypnotizing colors bring to life this quintessential movie. 

3. Uncut Gems (2019)

Directed by: Josh & Benny Safdie

Adam Sandler is Howard Bling, a Jewish New Yorker, who owns a successful jewelry shop. Throughout the duration of this movie, Howie faces multiple uncomfortable scenarios and is endlessly attempting to resolve his issues. Not only a business story, but a love story, as Howard shares a romance with Julia Fox that is so pure and tenderhearted, it will make you desperate to find your own Howard Bling. So where was Adam Sandler’s Oscar nomination for this role? Hopefully lost in the mail. 

4. Frances Ha (2012)

Directed by: Noah Baumbach

This movie is highly underrated and not appreciated enough for its excellent works. Frances Ha stars the beautifully talented Greta Gerwig and is directed by her now husband, Noah Baumbach. The movie focuses on a female friendship that is unbreakable and emotional. Shot in black and white, this film needs no color to represent its beauty, gripping plot and lovable characters. 

5. American Hustle (2013)

Directed by: David O’Russell

Step inside the wild and creative world of director David O’Russell. Each one of his movies have gripping plots, notable cast members and incredible soundtracks. American Hustle follows the lifestyle of two con artists played by Amy Adams and Christian Bale. The movie takes place in the 1970s, therefore naturally making the soundtrack, costume and set design magical. 

6. Brooklyn (2015)

Directed by: John Crowley

This movie is a beautiful, yet tragic love story. Follow the life of Eilis Lacey, played by Saoirse Ronan, who immigrates from Ireland, to New York City in the 1950s. She falls in love with two different men from two different countries, and faces the difficult decision of who she wishes to be with. Throughout her journey, she learns independence and self love, while revealing the realities of womanhood. 

7.Good Time (2017)

Directed by: Josh & Benny Safdie

Surely this movie will widen your palate and deepen your appreciation for cinema and the works of many different underrated filmmakers. Directed by the Safdie brothers and starring Robert Pattison – I think that’s all that needs to be said to have you fully convinced you will wholeheartedly enjoy this intense cinematic masterpiece.

Do you want to cry, laugh and fall in love all in one movie? Marriage Story is the perfect way to do so. This movie will put you right in the feels, as it represents close-to-home topics that discuss the messiness of divorce and child custody.
