Photography holds great significance in all our lives by capturing the memories and people we love most. These five ladies are redefining what it means to be a photographer in this digital age, and showcasing their skills all across social media. From California to New York City, these wonderfully talented women are making waves across America, with different photography styles by women, for women. Sheesh Magazine has curated a list of five female photographers everyone needs to keep an eye out for.
1. Mia Murphy; @miiamurphy
Mia Murphy is a 20-year-old aspiring photographer from California, who focuses on fashion, lifestyle, and portraiture photography. Mia started her photography journey in high school as the head photographer of her high school yearbook, and later was accepted to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. At FIT, Mia flourished as an artist and developed her craft more and more each day. Mia had to move back to her hometown in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was difficult but also exciting to be able to shoot in a different location with her new found passion and creativity. Mia has now recently released her new series titled, “Too Fucking Suburban” which is a fine art collection based on fashion and lifestyle photography. This is a nod to moving back to suburban life after living in the big city, which features models in suburban neighborhoods flaunting editorial fashion garments. 2. Ellie Andrews; @ellieportt
Ellie Andrews is a 19-year-old photographer who grew up in Long Beach, California but is currently residing in New York City for her schooling experience. Ellie’s work started with photographing for Brandy Melville USA which showcased her talents in a beautiful way and gave her a platform to work with. Since then Ellie has broadened her horizons and began to work on more editorial and fashion content, which she has grown to love much more! Ellie strategically uses social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to grow her following and get more traffic to her photographs. Ellie also consistently posts about living in NYC and what it’s like to be a photographer there, which helps her platforms grow as well. Ellie’s pop funk editing styles and fresh lifestyle photography of teens in New York City will leave you dying to give her a follow!
3. Samantha Spence; @samspencework
Samantha Spence’s luxurious photography will make you feel like you’re falling into the pages of Vogue. At just 22-years-old Spence has managed to create a name for herself as a high fashion editorial photographer. With a background in contemporary dance and ballet, Spence feels these experiences have been one of the most influential pieces in the development of her photographic eye. Samantha started her journey just over a year ago and has already been featured in publications like Vogue, Elle Bulgaria, L’Officiel, and more. Spence’s first official fashion shoot began at Coco Rocha’s Model Camp in New York City, which is where she truly fell in love with her craft and gained an other worldly education. This thrust Samantha into the high fashion world of photography from which she never looked back. Samantha is currently getting ready to shoot her first Harper’s Bazaar cover in the next coming weeks, so be on the lookout for Samantha Spence’s work in all your favorite publications.
4. Em Higgins; @yobabyem
Em Higgins is a truly one-of-a-kind photographer, whose passion for photography and editing abundantly shines through all of her work. Just 18-years-old from New York City, Em uses her passion for styling and curation to create her wanderlust filled images. With over 15k followers on TikTok and over half a million likes, Em Higgins has made quite the name for herself at such a young age. Em curates photoshoots to create and capture her own perception of adolescence and emerging adulthood in a fantastical, and elevated way. Em hopes to skew the viewer’s idea of perceived reality in a more visually appealing and perplexing way. She often uses her models or certain props and editing styles to achieve this dystopian reality. In her free time she eats buttered bagels, avoids her abundance of school work, and attempts to cuddle with her cat Max. Creating a fantasy land with the beauty of adulthood, Em Higgins is on our list of ones to watch.
5. Marina Casey; @marinahunter.photo
Blowing up on TikTok with over 200,000 views, Marina Casey is a 25-year-old photographer from South Carolina that has gained popularity from her creative direction and photography skills. Marina first started taking photography classes in college where she became entranced by the world of film photography. Since then she has learned to develop and manipulate her own prints, turning her passions into a growing successful business. Marina is consistently raising creative standards from her Jennfier’s Body inspired shoots to her creativity with color in dive bars around her hometown.
